Svatbata by Marcos Morau at Grand Théâtre de Genève

From the wings

After photographing Svatbata from the audience during the dress and final rehearsals, I came back during a public performance to photograph the piece from the wings.

I have always loved working from backstage. Being immersed within the performance allows me to get closer to the dancers and capture more intimate moments. Fragments of tension, breath, concentration and physicality that often disappear from a frontal perspective.

Created by Marcos Morau for the Ballet of the Grand Théâtre de Genève, Svatbata unfolds like a powerful ritual inspired by Bulgarian folklore and traditions, where celebration, trance, memory and sacrifice constantly intertwine.

ABOUT the Author

I’m Gregory Batardon
Former dancer
Dance photographer

I was born in Geneva in 1971 and studied visual arts at the Collège de Genève while pursuing intensive dance training at the École de Danse de Genève.

In 2010, I stepped away from the stage to dedicate myself to dance photography.
Today, I work with leading ballet companies, contemporary dance institutions, junior companies, and schools, as well as on personal studio projects. I also photograph dancers for professional portfolios, where I draw on my experience as a dancer to guide them beyond the pose and bring out their best.
