Dancers performing Marco Goecke’s Dark Matter on stage at Theater Basel

Dark Matter is an evening of short works by choreographer Marco Goecke, presented at Theater Basel.

Presented on the Small Stage of Theater Basel, the programme brings together solos, duets and small ensemble pieces drawn from different moments of Marco Goecke’s repertoire. Each work reveals a different facet of his choreography — a language known for its nervous energy, emotional intensity and striking physical detail.

The evening includes iconic works such as Äffi, which first brought international attention to Goecke in 2005, alongside more intimate pieces like Tué and the atmospheric duet Midnight Raga.

Set to a wide range of music — from Nina Simone and Lady Gaga to the French singer Barbara — the programme moves between darkness and lyricism, exploring themes of closeness, tension, transformation and hope. Performed by the dancers of Theater Basel, these works reveal the emotional immediacy that defines Goecke’s choreography — a kind of “dark matter” that lives in subtle gestures, fleeting moments and the intensity of presence on stage.

I’m Gregory Batardon

Dance photographer

I was born in Geneva in 1971 and studied visual arts at the Collège de Genève while pursuing intensive dance training at the École de Danse de Genève.

In 2010, I stepped away from the stage to dedicate myself to dance photography.
Today, I work with leading ballet companies, contemporary dance institutions, junior companies, and schools, as well as on personal studio projects. I also photograph dancers for professional portfolios, where I draw on my experience as a dancer to guide them beyond the pose and bring out their best.
